Outdoor Flags Rule in Virginia Helpping Small Business To Advertise

No matter what size your small business is, the cost of advertising online or offline can be very expensive. This is a ongoing cost that you always need to consider in order to get more clients and customers into your door. There are many affordable ways to advertise.

Using banners and outdoor flags is a common way for small businesses to advertise, but in Suffolk, Virginia this practice can now result in a fine. According to city rules, the only flags that are allowed to be flown in Suffolk are the American and Virginia state flags.

However, the enforcement of this law has been selective, with city zoning inspectors telling some businesses must remove their banners and flags while others are allowed to remain.

This random enforcement has predictably led to complaints by small business owners who feel unfairly targeted while big companies are being given preferential treatment. If businesses ignore a request from the city to take down a banner or flag, they can be taken to court and fined up to $3,000. However, none of the large companies in the city displaying flags or banners had acquired a permit to do so, and none had been visited by a zoning inspector.
